Looking to buy a new work suit? You try it on.

Looking to buy a new car? You test drive it.

Looking to buy a house? You view it.

    …you catch my drift?

Anytime we make a significant purchase, typically it’s a “try it before you buy it” scenario. It gives us the reassurance that if we don’t like it, well, at least we’re not committed to it. However, with a career move, unfortunately this isn’t the case. Sure, you can ask what the culture is like in the interviews, you can get a tour of the office, or talk to an existing team member, but ultimately, you won’t know what the culture is like until you’ve already committed. To me, that kind of seems like signing a contract with a blindfold on, doesn’t it?

Thankfully, many organisations have realised it’s not worth the risk to assume that talent will thrive in their existing culture. Instead, we’re seeing more regularly the trend of companies showing what really happens behind the scenes which gives potential hires an opportunity to see if the culture is right for them. LinkedIn recently hosted an event on ‘Branding to win the best talent’ and the host, Megan Speelman, quoted “The better you can show what happens behind the scenes, the more attractive you are going to be”. Couldn’t agree more.

It’s also important to note that the power has shifted to the candidate as a result of the digital evolution. Candidates have choices, and it’s now up to companies to come to the table and truly answer: “Why work with us”.

So, what do these powerful job seekers really want to know about your culture? They want to know:

    • What are your perks?
    • What makes you tick?
    • What are your values?
    • What differentiates you from everyone else?
    • What does the company look like?
    • How many people work there?
    • How many offices do you have?

Here are a few channels to showcase your culture – it’s best to have a variety of mediums to creatively show off your people and your perks. Don’t worry about bragging, people want to see it!

    • Blogs on what you’re up to
    • Videos showing some personality
    • Team photos on social channels
    • A great “career” page on your website
    • Individuals posting to their social networks about their job (your employees are your brand ambassadors!)
    • Positive Glassdoor reviews & Google reviews

The more you’re willing to share, the more you’ll attract talent that fit the puzzle.
