In our hiring process, coachability often surpasses experience in terms of importance.

But how do you identify this trait during interviews? Here’s a quick guide:

    1. Understand that being open to learning and growth can be more valuable than prior experience.

    2. Begin by gauging their self-awareness. Ask questions such as:

    • “How do you think this interview went?”
    • “What changes would you make?”
    • “How exactly would you implement those changes?”
    • “What do you believe would be the outcome of these changes?”

Look for candidates who exhibit self-awareness, the ability to analyse their performance, and the capacity to express potential improvements. Beware of those who lack self-awareness.

    3. Test their ability to act on feedback, whether it’s self-generated or provided by the interviewer.

Request them to revisit a part of the interview they suggested improving. This could involve rephrasing an answer, addressing a missed question, or implementing feedback discussed during the coachability questions.

This step allows you to determine their ability to self-assess, devise strategies for improvement, and effectively execute those enhancements.

By following these steps, you can gain valuable insights into a candidate’s coachability – a crucial quality for success in any role.
